About the Club
The MVHS Science Olympiad team educates and inspires
students in all STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines
through hands-on activities. The club
includes team members that compete at the annual Science Olympiad competition,
and also provides learning opportunities to explore science further. During
lunch and on occasion evening meetings we do lab activities, have subject
expert lectures, and prepare for the upcoming competition.
About the Science
Olympiad
A Science Olympiad team functions much like an athletic
team, requiring preparation, commitment, coaching, and practice throughout the
year.
The team competes annually in the regional tournament, with
aspirations to qualify for the state tournament, and eventually, the national
tournament.
Each team is composed of up to 15 members with 2 alternates.
This year, the Bay Area Region Science Olympiad (BARSO) tournament allows up to
2 teams per high school. In the past, and potentially in the future, each high
school will be permitted to enter up to 3 teams.
The tournaments are similar to track meets consisting of a
series of 23 team events covering anatomy, chemistry, earth science,
engineering, genetics, geology, mechanical engineering, physics, and
technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad
encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. All subjects are
based on national Common Core standards. There is also a balance between events
with requiring knowledge of science concepts, process skills, and applications.
The regional competition for the 2013-2014 year is scheduled
for March 15, 2014. The successful teams start recruiting and preparing the
summer before the tournament. You can find the website at www.soinc.org, and the list of events for next year at www.soinc.org/2014_div_c_events.
